Out of Athens’ three ports, Rafina is the closest one to Athens’ airport. In fact the two are only 15 km one from another.
Rafina is considered the entrance for some islands in the Cyclades such as Tinos, Mykonos and Andros. Besides from reaching these islands it also stops in the port of Marmaras in Eubea.
Taking a ferry from Rafina is a valid alternative to have to travel all the way to port of Piraeus, especially during high season when Piraeus is particularly crowded and tickets aren’t always available. In Rafina you will still find all the main ferry companies that travel across the Aegean sea. These companies are the following: Blue Star Ferries, SeaJet, Hellenic Seaway and Gold Star Ferries.
Reaching the port of Rafina by taxi
Rafina can be reached from the airport by taxi, the ride will last about 30 minutes, according to traffic and what type of road your taxi driver takes. The price ranges between 35,00 € during the day and 50,00 € at night (24:00 – 5:00). If you book your taxi in advance you may even receive a discount.
Reaching the port of Rafina by bus
Another alternative is to take a KTEL bus (white and orange colours). Once you arrive in the airport you will have to reach the bus station that is located in front of the Sofitel hotel, between exits 2 and 3. There are busses that leave every 50 minutes, the bus ride will last about half an hour and you will arrive at a bus station in front of the port. Remember that a bus is slower than a taxi and you may have to consider taking a taxi if you are in a hurry.
The tickets are very cheap (maximum 5 €). The timetables change from year to year and for this reason we suggest you go and chec them up on the KTEL site. As previously said the bus will take you directly to the port located in Rafina’s center. In the port you will also find some kiosks that sell bus tickets for when you are travelling back to the aiport. If you aren’t in a hurry or your ferry is late there are also quite a few taverns and bars around the port that serve things to eat and drink!
