Antipaxos (Antipaxi in modern Greek) is Paxos’ smaller “sister” and it can be reached in 20 minutes from the main island. The island of Antipaxos is almost completely uninhabited for most of the year but it fills with tourists during the summer. Here people can find fantastic beaches besides wild and lush nature and some of the best and rarest Greek wine you will ever taste as the island is covered in vineyards.

If you want to take a daily trip to Antipaxos the quickest route is to go from Corfu to Paxos and then to Antipaxos. Once arrived you will find yourself on the smallest of the Ionian islands, a natural oasis to discover from one of the many beaches or from one of the many paths through the woods that cover the island.

Most tourists that visit the island decide to spend the night in Paxos and visit Antipaxos during the day as there are less tourists than on the nearby island. The arrival port of Agrapidia is the biggest rural center that you will find on the island

Why choose Antipaxos?

In Antipaxos you won’t find any hotels or other structures for tourists but just a few houses or villas where to rent a room. The taverns aren’t open during the evening and there aren’t many tourists that spend the night on the island. Antipaxos is the perfect destination for those people looking for the authentic Greek atmosphere.

The island only measures 5 square kilometers and there is only one road that can be used to move around.

Obviously being such a small island it is a place that is best visited during a daily trip, especially if you are with your family. If you like snorkeling Antipaxos has a great marine life with plenty of coloured fish, a lot of aquatic vegetation and many submerged caves.

If instead you prefer walking you will have the chance to walk all the way to the lighthouse located on the southern part of the island. An important thing to remember if you are visiting this island is to always carry an extra bottle of water with you as there aren’t any shops where to buy some. Last but not least if you visit Antipaxos remember to go and visit the beautiful Blue Caves

Antipaxos is famous for its beaches that remind those of the carribeans thanks to the white sand and turquoise waters. Underwater there are some very coloured fish, marine vegetation and caves that are really great for divers and snorkelers. The eastern part of the island is the one with the nicest beaches, they are almost all equipped with anything you may need you. You can also leave from Corfù to visit this island for a day and discover all the small beaches of this tiny island. Here are some of the best beaches:

Vrika beach

The most famous and largest beach of the island, it is the first location you will visit if you get the boat coming from Paxos. Vrika beach is very wide, it has white sand and a crystal clear sea. There are two equipped beaches where you can rent a beach umbrella or a sunbed and a few taverns where you will have the chance to try some delicious local food while relaxing under the sun.

Meso Vrika beach

If you carry on Vrika beach you will find a long path that leads directly to the nearby beach of Mesovrika. The beach is very similar to Vrika but it is just a little smaller. Since it is quite difficult to reach it isn’t very equipped and it is generally not very crowded (in the months when there are less tourists it can be completely empty). There are some boats just outside the beach that spoil the sea view slightly.

Voutoumi beach

If you follow the path for Vrika you will also see the beautiful beach of Voutoumi. From the path you will see the beautiful colours of this beach. The sand is incredibly white and the water is turquoise, the mediterranean vegetation surrounds this small bay giving it a wonderful appearance. Voutoumi is a very wild beach and the only two taverns you will find near it are located quite far away from the beach.

From the beach you can walk about 200 steps and reach Bella Vista tavern, famous for its delicious food and for the magnificent panorama that you can enjoy from there. Take advantage of the situation and try toka as many pictures as possible if you decide to visit it.

What can you do in Antipaxos? The first thing to do when visiting the island is definitely to go to the sea and then enjoy the wonderful views and landscapes, especially during sunset. This island is very barren and offers many natural beauties besides a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. In Paxos you will have the chance to rent a boat and explore Antipaxos coast.

Being an island without an airport, Antipaxos is connected via sea to Paxos (which is connected to Corfù). Here are some of the options you can choose to reach it:

Reaching Antipaxos from Corfù

Once you land in Corfù’s international airport you will have to reach the island’s port. There are ferries and hydrofoils that leave for Paxos on a daily basis, these will get you to paxos in about an hour and a half. You can also choose to spend a day in Paxos and Antipaxos.

The touristic boats leave three times a week for the ports of Benitses, Lefkimmi or Kavos. There are also many taxi boats that leave from the main ports of Gaios, Loggos and Lakka. Taxi boats are very fast but they are also a lot more expensive than the other boats that leave every morning at half ten from Gaios: the journey lasts about 20 minutes and the price is around 15,00 € .

The last run for Paxos is at 17:30. From Italy you can reach the island of Corfù thanks to ferries that leave from the ports of Venice (26 hours of journey), Ancona (14 hours of journey), Bari and Brindisi (8/9 hours of journey).

On Antipaxos you will find far less structures than in Paxos, here in fact there are very few hotels, studios and apartments. In Antipaxos there are mostly studios and most of them are located in either Antiparos city, the island’s capital and port, or in Agios Georgios, a small inhabited center. These are the two areas of the island where you will find most apartments, studios and some of Antiparos’ most beautiful beaches.

Where to stay in Antipaxos

In Antipaxos there is only one hotel, this is located near the center of Antiparos city. There aren’t many studios for families and couples as accommodations with plenty of space, light and comfortness are very rare. The apartments are mostly rented by local people that during the summer rent their houses. Certainly this will give you the chance to enjoy a truly unique vacation surrounded by the Greek atmosphere.
